Recycling Cigarette Containers

As innocuous as empty film canisters may seem, they can actually be quite useful when the right through is provoked.
Cigarette butts are a thing which plagues the environment on a daily basis. Not only are cigarettes quite possibly the most harmful thing we can apply to our bodies (this of course does not include the consumption of radioactive products, or things like knives) but the smoke harms the air and the ozone layer.

Cigarette butts infuse our soils and the earth with unwanted chemicals like acetone and tar, which kill and destroy much wildlife each year. Cigarette butts are simply disposed of with a simple flick, and are usually not given much of a second thought in terms of the environment.
In some countries, harsh fines are implemented when it is discovered of careless cigarette butt disposal. This is a great incentive not only to quit the habit, but to help the environment.

Empty film canisters can be used as ash trays on the go. This is a fascinating way of recycling empty plastic containers, and helping the environment stay cigarette free.
When finished smoking a cigarette, you would simply place the cigarette butt lit end down into the plastic, extinguish the ember, and then place the lid over the top. This holds the cigarette butts until you are able to dispose of them appropriately.

A music festival in Australia, which is dedicated to helping the wildlife, the environment and the world in general, implemented this idea in 2005.
Volunteers for the Byron Bay based festival, Splendour in the Grass, handed out little empty film canisters, with stickers on them reminding people of the harsh facts when it comes to cigarettes and the environment.
They had cigarette police, who if they saw a punter smoking and discarding their cigarette on the ground, they would request that the person place their cigarette butt in the canister, as well as picking up a few extra ones off the ground.

This was a fantastic idea, in terms of getting rid of cigarette butts in a part of the world that needs its environment to withstand the pressure of people and their societies around them. Some people considered the task of putting out the cigarette in the canister too much, and relinquished from cigarettes for the duration of the festival.

After a punter had filled up their canister, several depositing bins were available for discarding the canisters.

If many other places in the world executed this mentality, the world would surely be a cleaner place, on both the ground and in the air.

If you’re a cigarette smoker, and you also have a few spare film canisters lying around, please consider the environment and the difficult task of having to process such chemicals.
Use your empty film canisters when you are away from an ash tray, and hopefully help preserve our delicate eco system.
